gelatin silver print on Baryta paper, 57 x 38 cm signed and described on the reverse in pencil: 'Pawel Jaszczuk | 1/6 + 2AP'
EXHIBITED: - Kinky City, OstLicht Selection, OstLicht, Vienna, 2016 - Kinky City, Leica Gallery, Vienna, 2015 - Kinky City, wystawa podwojna Pawel Jaszczuk / Nobuyoshi Araki, Leica Gallery, Warsaw, 2014 - Kinky City, Zen Foto Gallery, Beijing 2010 - Kinky City, Zen Foto Gallery, Tokio, 2010
In the 'Kinky City' series, Pawel Jaszczuk photographed the erotic life of clubs, S&M parties, happening bars and the fetish bars of Tokyo. It took him over two years to reach some of these locations. The people in the photographs are everymen, rich men, female managers of international corporations. Jaszczuk shows how they remove their clothing and socially acceptable roles at night to enjoy several hours of pleasure, sin or liberation (excerpt from introduction to exhibition, Leica Gallery, Warsaw, 2014). “Kinky City is a game for insiders. The fantasy of an inner 'I', a second identity. By rejecting the everyday 'I', this 'other' frees itself from what is imposed upon it - from convention and purpose. By liberating itself, it liberates that which is hidden; that which is disturbing; that which is forbidden - addiction, fulfillment, utopia... The viewer is disturbed by the calmness of that which is other and what is discovered here. Subversiveness is normality. Normality becomes lost in the magic of the somnolent fetish. The sexual underground reveals itself as liberated from the oppression of the system - paradox - pain of the body a reward for suffering of the mind... Is it perdition? Escape? Liberation?” (Pawel Jaszczuk).
