A light in the corridor/Lumiere dans le couloir - a set of th 4 photographs, 1980

Light was the main motif of many Eustachy Kossakowski’s photographs. Rays of light appeared not only in everyday spaces, such as corridors, but also in mystical ones, such as the interior of the Chartres cathedral or the ruins of ancient buildings in Pompei. Those Kossakowski’s works, however, are rarely auctioned, which makes our offer decidedly unique. Kossakowski’s 'Swiatlo w korytarzu / La lumière dans le couloir' from 1980 consists of four photographs. Each of them shows the same fragment of space in a corridor, photographed from the same place. What differs is, as the title suggests, the light registered in the photographs. It is the presentation of light phenomena that is the mark of Kossakowski’s photographic style. In one of his interviews, Kossakowski explained: 'The essence of my photography is light which I treat as an object in itself. [...] I have been trying to use light for something more than just the modulation of objects. I am interested in photographing those moments which will never happen again' ([quoted from:] Karol Sienkiewicz, Eustachy Kossakowski, culture.pl, July, 2009).

- In addition to the hammer price, the successful bidder agrees to pay us a buyer's premium on the hammer price of each lot sold. On all lots we charge 18 % of the hammer price.
